Burkina Faso: handmade Nounouma pottery

Ref: KTOU23

The Nounouma (or Nouni) are a population living in West Africa, in south-central Burkina Faso, north of Ghana. Nounouma art is distinguished by different pieces: from the very colourful masks, generally intended to honour ancestors, to pottery or clay tableware.

Pieces such as these are considered very valuable, as pottery and crockery of this type are considered a symbol of wealth, and are carefully stacked in the house.

In south-western Burkina Faso, only older women are allowed to make ritual vessels, intended to receive offerings for the spirits, on pain of sterility.

New ceramics are used to boil different types of plants for the baths of a newborn baby.
