Silk and Cotton hand fan from Ghana

Unique fan, hand made with Kente fabric. Kente, is a type of silk and cotton fabric made of interwoven cloth strips. Kente is made in Akan lands and is worn by almost every Ghanaian tribe.

It is an Akan royal and sacred cloth worn only in times of extreme importance and was the cloth of kings, and its importance has remained intact.

The cloth can vary in colors, as each color has its proper meaning and symbology

  • black > personal and spiritual development
  • azure > tranquility and peace, harmony and love
  • green > metaphore of nature: sowing and harvest times seen as spiritual renewal
  • golden > royalty, wealth, high status, glory and spiritual purity
  • grey > healing and cleaning rituals: linked to ashes
  • brown > the color of Mother Earth: healing and renewal
  • pinkish > feminine essence: life - a softer shade of red
  • purple > feminine aspects of life, usually worn by women
  • red > a political or spiritual character: blood shedding and sacrificial rites
  • silver > serenity and calm, purity and joy: linked to the moon
  • white > purification, sanctification rites and festive occasions
  • yellow > preciousness, royalty, wealth, fertility, beauty
